MESA Middle School program. This program works as an in-class model. The
students enroll in a MESA Math and/or a MESA Science class. Within the classroom the MESA teacher incorporates the MESA Real-World Mathematics Through Science curriculum as a supplement to the regular class curriculum. An example of this is the Designing Environments unit, where the student strengthens his/her understanding of area, perimeter, slope, acreage and more by designing and building a cabin to fit into a designated campground. The MESA curriculum is designed to enhance the student's learning through hands-on activities, field trips, and interaction with professionals in the math and science fields.
Field trips range from corporate visits to Microsoft or Boeing to a learning facility such as the Museum of Flight, Pacific Science Center, or the University of Washington. Guest speakers represent the field of interest that the student is currently learning. Speakers invited to the classroom may be a Seismologist from the University of Washington or a group of Bioengineers who demonstrate the use of articial limbs. MESA's Middle School in-class model encourages the use of field trips and guest speakers as a way to further enhance the learning environment and enthusiasm of the student.
Middle School Summer Science Program. We accept 20 girls and 20 boys for a two week hands-on science program for current middle school age students at the University of Washington. Applications and complete details for this program will be available in April.
Seattle MESA day brings more than 500 K - 12 MESA students together to participate in a variety of math, engineering, and science competitions, ranging from Balsa Gliders to Egg Drop to Trebuchet (capapults). Students prepare for these events in their MESA classes throughout the school year. This high-energy day also engages more than 100 volunteers from local corporations and universities. This year's event will take place on Saturday, May 10th from 8:30am-2:30pm at a location to be determined.

9th Grade Bridge Program is an after-school and Saturday program for freshmen at Cleveland, Franklin, Garfield, Rainier Beach, and Chief Sealth High Schools. This program is designed to increase the number of African-American, Native American, Latino and Samoan students who achieve at a 3.0 or higher GPA during their ninth grade year. During the first three years of the program, nearly 70% of MESA students have earned a 3.0 or higher GPA, compared to 20% of their peers.
Students participate twice per week, after school, throughout the school year, working in study groups with their peers and with tutors. One Saturday per month, students meet at the UW for hands-on engineering activities and mentoring. In addition to academic support and enrichment, the program focuses on four themes: Leadership, Motivation, Responsibility, and Teamwork. Apply in May.
